Wisconsin Snowstorm...

Brian E. here.
Today is a very snowy day here, ended up canceling my trip up to La Crosse- was going to be doing a tasting at two accounts- Piggy's and the FreightHouse- two very cool places that support our product in the La X. Stopped by Imperial Garden (bartender: Kevin) and Sundance608 (bartender: Ross) in Madison last night to share with them two very tasty cocktails- the Martinez and the Ramos Gin Fizz.
The recipe for the Martinez is as follows:

The Martinez (a la Michael Rubel at The Violet Hour in Chicago)
3 oz. Death's Door Gin (as if you needed the link)
1.5 oz Carpano Antica Vermouth (if you have never used this stuff, go find it- best in the world...)
1/2 oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
3 bashes of Peychaud's Aromatic Bitters (no other will do- unless you make your own...)

Add ingredients to an ice filled shaker- stir, don't shake! Pour into a chilled cocktail glass and then- the coup de grace- garnish orange peel over the drink, so the orange oils spray onto the surface of the drink.

Ross, bartender at Sundance608, and I tried messing around with other Sweet Vermouths- as Carpano Antica is definitely not a usual bar choice for vermouth- the best equivalent was Martini & Rossi, though it was noticeably less robust in flavor with the M&R compared to the Carpano. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.
There's some good history on the Martinez on the web- it's an oldie but a goodie- link here. Thanks Michael!
